“The Only Franchising Book to Buy This Year”

“Mitchell York has a proven track record in business coaching. A Columbia MBA, he’s coached executives for over 30 years and is the president of E2Ecoaching. He also blogs on the always-interesting All Business website, and recently wrote an informative post on the decisions that franchisees need to make to be successful…The purpose of [his] book is to answer that question that seems as old as Shakespeare by now: to franchise or not to franchise? In the book, York discusses the steps you’ll need to take to open a successful franchise and the mistakes you’ll have to avoid. If you’re wrestling with the idea of franchise ownership, this is definitely the one franchising book you should buy this year.”

As the current corporate director of human resources for a Fortune 500 company, I can attest and relate to all of the various corporate mindsets and cultures that are mentioned in the book. At times, I can certainly see how someone would like to just walk out the door chasing a dream. This is where this excellent book comes into play. Before anyone decides to jump off the company dock, they should read this book. The author, a person with a corporate background and a successful franchise does not try to sell the franchise experience. Rather (and quite well) he warns against the pitfalls. I particularly liked the picture he paints when talking about “running away from your job” versus “running toward your dream.”

I recently published Franchise-Freedom or Fantasy?  How to Know if a Franchise is Right for You After Your Corporate Career. The book is based on my seven years of experience as as a successful franchise owner and coach for entrepreneurs.

In my coaching practice, I work with executives who are considering entrepreneurship–which often includes an evaluation of buying a franchise. In the book, I lay out for the experienced business person a process for understanding whether franchising is a potentially viable alternative and, if it is, how to move forward. The book includes critical information including:

  • Knowing whether you are pursuing a franchise for the right reasons
  • The critical skills you need to be successful in franchising
  • What reserves you need before you start
  • How to negotiate with franchisors
  • How to evaluate non-franchise alternatives
